There is nothing worse than insect pests and their itchy mosquito bites, as if the sound of a mozzie buzzing around your room isn’t annoying enough!

The carbon dioxide we exhale and our scent are mosquito attractants enticing the little critters to suck our blood, leaving behind those annoying itchy bites.

However, if, like me, you are not particularly partial to the idea of exposing yourself to harsh and harmful chemicals found in standard repellents, here are a few natural ways to keep mozzies away:

Mosquito Repellent for the Skin:

  • 125 ml of vodka in a glass jar.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of citronella essential oil and 1 teaspoon of rose geranium essential oil to the vodka and stir.
  • Dip cotton balls in the homemade organic mosquito repellent and rub the mixture over your skin.

For the Room:
Another mosquito repelling option is to burn unscented candles, which give off carbon dioxide, attracting mosquitoes to them.
Placing cotton balls soaked with Citronella, Rosemary, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree or Lavender essential oils around the area will help as well.

When having a braai or keeping warm at the fire:
While braaing or in your fireplace, toss some sage or rosemary onto the hot coals. The mosquitoes actually cannot stand the smell of these herbs and will quickly vacate the area.

There you have it. There’s no need to take a chance with dangerous, poisonous insect repellants when you can make your own ☺
